Russell Wilson endured liquid diet following gruesome jaw injury
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was forced to endure a liquid diet for two or three days following a gruesome hit in a Week 10 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The three-time Pro Bowler said that his jaw was knocked out of alignment and had to be repaired.
“I had to wear this splint almost,” Wilson said, via Pro Football Talk. “Basically a hard mouthguard which would reset my jaw a little bit and make me feel good again.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter also reported that Wilson’s injury was not handled properly by the Seahawks, who mishandled the league’s concussion protocol. By rule, Seattle can be fined up to $150,000 for violating the protocol, but it remains unclear right now what the team’s penalty will be.
As for Wilson, who turns 29 next week, he has yet to miss a single NFL start during his six seasons in the league. Multiple Seahawks teammates have expressed to me that even they can’t believe some of the pain he plays through. Moreover, thanks to the recent jaw work, Wilson’s streak should remain intact for Monday night’s tilt versus the visiting Atlanta Falcons.
It is a huge game for both NFC stalwarts and their playoff aspirations. Should the 6-3 Seahawks win, they would assume the NFC’s four seed, but a loss would send them to the eight spot, out of the postseason. Atlanta meanwhile, sits at 5-4, behind both New Orleans and Carolina in the rugged NFC South.
It’s also worth noting that Wilson’s news comes on the heels of Seattle losing both Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor for the remainder of the season, due to injury.
