Roger Goodell and his wife donate to scholarship fund for children of soldier killed in Niger

Roger Goodell and his wife Jane Skinner Goodell were among the notable names to give to a scholarship fund set up for the children of an American soldier killed in Niger this month.

Army Sgt. La David T. Johnson, of Miami Gardens, Fla., was one of four American soldiers killed Oct. 4 in Niger during an ambush. A solider from Niger also died from the attack. Details of the attack are still being investigated.

Johnson left behind two children, ages 2 and 6, and his wife is pregnant with a third child. A Go Fund Me account was established to set up a scholarship fund. One of the biggest contributors after it was established was the Goodells, at $7,500. As of Friday afternoon, more than $600,000 of the $1 million goal had been raised. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Goodell’s donation.

Johnson’s family was in the news this week, when it was reported President Donald Trump told Johnson’s pregnant widow Myeshia Johnson that the soldier “he knew what he was signing up for.” Trump denied saying that. Trump and Goodell have been at odds over the debate over anthem protests.
