The Colorado Rockies announced Monday they have hired Mark Wiley as their director of pitching operations.
This position was recently created the Rockies, and it is not the same as the team's pitching coach, a role that has yet to be filled.
According to the Denver Post, Wiley will oversee the pitchers throughout the organization. He will also have a say in the hiring of the Rockies' next pitching coach. The Rockies are also looking for a replacement for manager Jim Tracy, who resigned after the season.
Wiley was a scout for the Marlins this past season and had previously worked as a pitching coach for four major-league teams.
The creation of the director of pitching operations position is another innovative move regarding pitchers by the Rockies, who limited their starting pitchers to around 75 pitchers throughout the second half of the 2012 season.
