San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria will be named the Chicago Cubs new manager on Thursday, multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday.
Renteria, 51, has never been a manager at the major-league level. He served eight seasons as a manager in the Miami Marlins' and Padres' farm system and spent the past six seasons as a coach with the Padres. He was the Padres bench coach the past two years.
Renteria is bilingual, which will help in communicating with several Cubs players and prospects, including Starlin Castro, Junior Lake and Javier Baez.
Renteria will replace Dale Sveum, who was fired on Sept. 30.
The Cubs also interviewed former major league managers A.J. Hinch, Eric Wedge and Manny Acta, as well as Dave Martinez and Brad Ausmus, who was hired by the Tigers.
Renteria is recuperating from hip surgery.
