Former North Carolina and Miami head coach Butch Davis will not become the head coach at Florida International, multiple media outlets reported, based on information from Davis' lawyer.
"[Davis] will not be taking the FIU job," Davis' attorney, Jon Sasser, told the Miami Herald.
Davis will remain a special assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
There had been reports last week that Davis was about to be hired as FIU head coach, succeeding Mario Cristobal, who had been fired.
The holdup then, according FoxSports.com, was that North Carolina was not willing to pay the remainder of the buyout owed to Davis - $1.77 million over the next three years - if he accepted the FIU job.
However, Sasser told the Herald there was no settlement agreement between UNC and Davis.
