Report: Watson will be 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup captain
Tom Watson, the last captain to lead the U.S. team to a Ryder Cup win on European soil, apparently will get a chance to repeat the feat.
According to The Golf Channel's Tim Rosaforte, Watson will be selected by the PGA of America as the U.S. captain for the 2014 matches at Gleneagles in Perth and Kinross, Scotland.
The official announcement will be made Thursday in New York.
Watson, 63, led the U.S. team that scored a 15-13 win at the Belfrey in Wishaw, England.
According to ESPN.com, PGA of America president Ted Bishop said "we've done something a little bit different this year" in terms of selecting the next captain. The report indicated that could mean a move from the recent trend of selecting still-active players as a captains, a group that has included Davis Love III, Corey Pavin, Paul Azinger and Tom Lehman.
Watson also would become the first person to lead the U.S. side twice since Jack Nicklaus was the captain in 1983 (a U.S. win in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and 1987 (a Europe win in Dublin, Ohio).
Watson would be a popular choice in the United Kingdom, where he won five British Opens. He played in four Ryder Cups, helping the U.S. team go 3-0-1 while winning 10 matches, losing four and halving one. Watson won eight major championships and finished in the top 10 a total of 46 times in 135 events.
The European team won this year's Ryder Cup 14 1/2-13 1/2 with a huge final-day comeback at Medinah Country Club in suburban Chicago.
