On a day where dozens of players were involuntarily released as NFL teams got down to the mandated 53-man season-opening roster, one veteran chose to go out his own way.
Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield told the team Saturday that he plans on retiring, according to FOX Sports. It brings to an end a 14-year NFL career that saw Winfield star for the Bills, Vikings and Seahawks, and included appearances in three Pro Bowls.
Winfield, 36, may have made his decision because he expected he wouldn't make the 53-man roster, the FOX Sports report speculated.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll tweeted, "Wishing Antoine Winfield the best in his decision to retire. He's a consummate pro and a great team player. We were lucky to have him."
