The University of Southern California interviewed Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio for its head coaching job two weeks ago, the Broncos confirmed Sunday.
Del Rio has been a rumored candidate for the Trojans' job for the past two months.
USC received permission to interview Del Rio by Broncos executive John Elway during the team's Week 9 bye.
Del Rio is also serving as Denver's interim coach with head coach John Fox recovering from heart surgery.
Trojans athletic director Pat Haden flew to Denver to meet with Del Rio one day before Fox's heart scare.
Del Rio was a standout football and baseball player for Southern Cal before his NFL career. He was co-MVP honor of the 1985 Rose Bowl and was a runner-up for the Lombardi Award.
Southern Cal fired Lane Kiffin as coach after its 3-2 start to the season. Assistant coach Ed Orgeron is serving as interim head coach.
