New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez opened his Jets West camp on Thursday in Southern California, but rookie quarterback Geno Smith did not attend, NFL.com reported.
Smith is not expected to attend any of the camp sessions, according to the report.
The New York Daily News reported that Smith plans to work out in Florida through the weekend.
It's not clear what Smith's absence means, but it probably will lead to speculation about the relationship between Sanchez and Smith, who will compete for the Jets' starting quarterback job in training camp.
Sanchez has hosted the camp in Mission Viejo, Calif., the past four years. Smith said he didn't commit to the event because he didn't know what it was. He also said Sanchez did not formally invite him.
