New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will undergo back surgery on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.
The procedure will be handled by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles.
The back operation is minor, Gronkowski's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told WQAM radio in Miami. Expected recovery time is eight to 12 weeks, putting Gronkowski's availability for the season opener against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 8 in jeopardy.
This will be the fifth surgery for Gronkowski since November. He had a fourth operation on May 20 to install a plate in his broken left forearm that he fractured in November. Rosenhaus said the back procedure is a pre-emptive measure to make sure Gronkowski is fully healthy once the forearm heals. .
Gronkowski had a previous back surgery while in college at Arizona. Rosenhaus said Gronkowski played through back pain last season with the Patriots.
