Tight end Rob Gronkowski, who potentially could have been placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, will instead remain on the New England Patriots' 53-man season-opening active roster, according to a report Saturday by ESPN.
While Gronkowski may not be ready to play in the Patriots' season opener against the Buffalo Bills or the second game on Sept. 12 against the New York Jets, there apparently was enough progress in his recovery from back and arm surgery during the offseason that he'll likely be able to return to the team in due time, rather than having to be placed on IR/PUP for the first six weeks.
Other players released Saturday include punter Zoltan Mesko, defensive tackle Marcus Forston and running back George Winn.
Mesko, who had started the last three seasons, may have been cut because of the $1.4 million he was due to receive this season when undrafted rookie Ryan Allen will make almost $1 million less.
