Report: Fenway wants to stage college football game

Football in Fenway Park? The Boston Red Sox apparently would like to make it happen.

Preliminary discussions are under way to bring college football to Fenway, and two of the teams mentioned in a report by The Boston Globe on Tuesday were Notre Dame and Connecticut.

However, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement, "Media reports today that we will play Uconn in Fenway Park in 2014 are inaccurate."

Sources had told The Globe that talks for a potential game between the Huskies and the Fighting Irish were in the early stages. Notre Dame has an open date on its 2014 schedule.

Football hasn't been played in Fenway since Dec. 1, 1968, when the then-Boston Patriots faced the Cincinnati Bengals. Until that time, high school, college and pro football was regularly played there.

In recent years, baseball parks such as Wrigley Field in Chicago and Yankee Stadium in New York have played host to college football games.
