Milwaukee Brewers leftfielder Ryan Braun returned Thursday from his visit with a hand specialist with good news and bad news.
He told reporters that surgery won't be needed, but said it "could be a while" before he's healthy enough to be activated from the disabled list.
"It was nice to get clarity," he said. "There's comfort in knowing what we're dealing with. It's nothing we didn't expect."
Braun was placed on the disabled list June 14. Following his doctor's visit, he won't take any batting practice for the foreseeable future.
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke wasn't sure whether Braun would come off the DL after 15 days.
"I don't know," he said. "It could be longer. It's not a quick fix. We'll see what happens at the end of the DL. It sounds like he's going to have to swing to see how it feels so he doesn't go backwards like he did when we put him on the DL."
