The San Francisco 49ers reportedly are close to completing a trade that will send quarterback Alex Smith to another team.
Forty-Niners officials have told other teams that a deal for Smith is "effectively complete," according to a tweet by Jason La Canfora CBSSports.com.
The team to whom Smith would be traded was not identified, and the trade cannot be made official until March 12.
The team that has shown the most interest in Smith is the Kansas City Chief, although there is no confirmation they are team that is close to acquiring Smith.
. Furthermore, a high-ranking 49ers source told NFL.com's Albert Breer that he was not aware of any deal for Smith being completed.
Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell told the Florida Times-Union that the Jaguars were not the team that has made a deal for Smith.
