Former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao spoke with MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani and the UFC 177 media day and discussed his emotions heading into the rematch before Barao revealed that he barely remembers the original encounter.
While many were astounded to see the UFC quickly book a rematch between Renan Barao and T.J. Dillashaw, the former bantamweight champion expected this to be the case from the start.
Speaking to MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani, Barao stated (through a translator) that the timing was exactly how he envisioned it would be.
"He is very glad about this chance and is really, really happy to get the rematch right away. He said ‘that's what I want, I want him right away.' Three months was perfect. That's what we needed to do the right camp to get the rematch."
When asked to describe his feelings after rewatching the original bout against Dillashaw, Barao revealed that he simply did not recognize himself at any point during the fight.
"Every time he watches it he gets a little surprised because he didn't recognize himself in the fight. Sometimes it is good to take the experience of a loss, but he didn't recognize himself."
