Cincinnati Reds right-handed reliever Jonathan Broxton was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with an elbow strain in his throwing arm.
The Reds recalled righty Pedro Villarreal from Class AAA Louisville.
The move to place Broxton on the DL was retroactive to Friday. He last pitched on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs in the 14th inning, taking the loss. He experienced elbow soreness during his previous outing.
Broxton, 28, has a 4.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 27 innings this season.
