SAN DIEGO - Homer Bailey worked eight shutout innings before allowing a run and Brandon Phillips homered as the Cincinnati Reds halted a five-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday before 26,450 fans at Petco Park.
Bailey (6-10) had struggled since throwing a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants on July 2. He was 0-4 with a 4.68 ERA entering Wednesday's game, but had little trouble with the Padres.
He gave up a run (unearned) when Chase Headley's RBI double scored Everth Cabrera -- who reached on an error by first baseman Joey Votto -- with one out in the ninth. Bailey finished with seven strikeouts and a walk on 116 pitches (79 strikes) in 8 1/3 innings.
Closer Aroldis Chapman came on and forced Yonder Alonso to fly out to center before striking out Jesus Guzman for his 25th save.
Phillips, who went 3-for-5, led off the second by driving a 1-2 pitch from Padres starter Eric Stults into the San Diego bullpen in left-center for a 1-0 Cincinnati lead. It was Phillips' 13th home run of the season.
In the seventh, the Reds scored three unearned runs after a throwing error by Headley allowed Derrick Robinson to reach and extend the inning.
Chris Heisey blooped a single over the head of Cabrera to score Zack Cosart before Votto lined a two-run double to right to bring home Robinson and Heisey for a 4-0 Reds' lead with two outs.
That chased Stults (8-10), who allowed four runs (one earned) on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked none on 109 pitches (73 strikes).
The Padres had won eight of nine when Stults pitched at Petco before Wednesday's setback.
The Reds (60-49) scored more than three runs for only the second time in their last 12 outings. The loss ended a four-game winning streak for San Diego (50-59).
NOTES: The Padres acquired RHP Ian Kennedy from the Diamondbacks for LHP Joe Thatcher and minor league RHP Matt Stites on Wednesday. Kennedy is 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts. Thatcher is 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA in 50 games. "We're excited to add a starting pitcher of Ian's pedigree," Padres executive vice president-general manager Josh Byrnes said. "He is under club control through 2015, and we feel he will help us take another step forward as a team." ... Reds RHP Jonathan Broxton was scheduled to start Wednesday night's game at Triple-A Louisville. Broxton was expected to pitch an inning. He has been on the disabled list since June 15 with a flexor mass strain in his right elbow. ... The Padres open a three-game series Friday against the New York Yankees, who will be visiting Petco for the first time. Yankees LHP CC Sabathia will face off against Padres RHP Andrew Cashner in the opener. ... The Reds host the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game set beginning Friday. RHP Shelby Miller of the Cardinals and Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo square off to start the series.
