Joey Miller and Daniel Barnes each hit key 3-pointers in the last three minutes, lifting Illinois-Chicago to a season-opening 59-52 win over UC-Riverside at UIC Pavilion.
Miller's 3 out of a timeout gave the Flames a 53-47 lead with 2:40 remaining, while Barnes hit from the right wing with just over a minute left to stretch the advantage to 58-50. UIC had missed nine straight from 3-point range before those two fell.
Senior center Josh Crittle led the Flames with 15 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Miller, a transfer from Eastern Illinois, came off the bench for 14. Gary Talton added 10 points and had a 7-to-0 assist-turnover ratio in 35 minutes.
Josh Fox scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Highlanders (0-2), which were blown out at DePaul Friday night in their season opener.
UIC established a 30-25 halftime lead, canning 6-of-12 from the 3-point range. That was more than enough to overcome UC-Riverside's 10-2 advantage in second chance points.
The Flames are back in action Friday, when they meet New Mexico in the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
Riverside went 0-for-Chicago, losing Friday at DePaul.
