The acquisition of Ryan Dempster was not the only news regarding the Texas Rangers' pitching staff on Tuesday.
The Rangers revealed that right-hander Neftali Feliz will need Tommy John surgery that will sideline him for the rest of the season. They also said Roy Oswalt will go to the bullpen..
Feliz is scheduled to have his surgery on Wednesday, and Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said team officials had known for a few days that Feliz would need the surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament. But they kept the information private until after the trade deadline. That prevents possible trade partners from knowing how desperate the Rangers were for pitching help.
Feliz, 25, started just seven games for the Rangers this season, going 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA. He hasn't pitched for the Rangers since May 18, but had been scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.
Dempster will take Oswalt's spot in the rotation and make his first start on Thursday.
Oswalt, signed by the Rangers on May 28, is 3-2 with a 6.42 ERA this season. He yielded 11 hits and eight runs in 5 1/3 innings in his most recent start, Monday against the Angels.
