Rams Have A Need For WR JuJu Smith-Schuster from USC

Sometimes the simplest of things can be difficult, but come the second round, pick number five, the 37th overall, it’s a wide receiver that the Los Angeles Rams should select.

Honesty is always best, and while Los Angeles is still shopping for a starting center, the glaring need for Jared Goff is someone to catch a football. With the big name wide receivers long gone from free agency, the 2017 NFL Draft provides some reasonable options for ‘sure hands’ this season.

Enter JuJu Smith-Schuster, wide receiver from the University of Southern California.

JuJu was a 12 game starter at USC, catching 54 passes for 724 yards and five touchdowns. At 6’-1”, and 215 lbs., JuJu would provide a large target for second year quarterback Jared Goff. Of interest is what new Rams head coach Sean McVay would possibly do with a rookie like Smith-Schuster given his time last season in D.C. with injury plagued Josh Doctson. Doctson was looked at to contribute a lot last season until an Achilles injury stole his rookie season.

Rams Holes To Fill: L.A. still has questions at some key positions

The bottom line in L.A. is this is a position they haven’t solved. If Goff is to truly emerge as the future franchise quarterback the Rams are desperate for, then taking a receiver in the second round makes all the more sense. And as much as I’d love John Ross from Washington to be available in round two, that seems highly unlikely.

JuJu would be a great choice with Ross just not being there for the Rams.

It’s reasonable that a starting center will come from a late veteran signing, and not from the draft, though it’s expected they will take a center later on draft weekend.

For the Rams, after going all in on Jared Goff in 2016 dictates that offense be where they go with their first pick in the 2017 draft. That it comes in the second round doesn’t mean they can’t get a solid receiver that can contribute on day one.

That the player could be JuJu Smith-Schuster makes it all the better.
