Despite mid-60s temperatures, Purdue was in Mollenkopf again for Practice 8 of the spring because of high winds.

Initial impressions from Friday's practice with more to come:

• The injuries are piling up — and they're hitting key players and positions now. A new group of three were added to the list Friday with starting running back Markell Jones (unknown), safety T.J. Jallow (head) and defensive end Chazmyn Turner (knee) missing practice.

They join other projected starters/players who have worked with the first-team units this spring on the sideline in DE Austin Larkin, DT Lorenzo Neal, OT Matt McCann, among other key role players (Brian Lankford-Johnson, D'J Edwards, etc).

"We have to find a way to work through it," Brohm said of the injuries. "The guys who are in there have to work hard and take advantage of their reps."

• McCann was back in full pads and knee braces for the first time this spring, getting limited work off to the side with an athletic trainer. McCann is out this spring after having offseason ankle surgery.

"We want to ease him back into it,"Coach Jeff Brohm said. "He's still not full go, but we can do a few things with him and just want to get him in better shape and make sure he's physically in conditioning so he can have a productive summer."

• With Jallow out, Simeon Smiley and C.J. Parker rotated reps with the first-team defense at safety alongside starter Navon Mosley. Newcomer Kai Higgins was with the 1s for Turner, who'd gotten spot snaps with the 1s this spring.
