CHICAGO (AP) -- Brandon Provost scored 23 points and Texas-Pan American maintained its second-place standing in the Great West Conference with a 55-51 victory over Chicago State on Saturday night.

The Broncs (14-15, 4-3 Great West) can finish no worse than third in the five-team conference.

Quinton Pippen led Chicago State (8-19, 2-4) with 14 points, and Clarke Rosenberg had 11.

In a game that was close throughout, Texas-Pan American pulled away with an 8-2 run that was capped by Shaquille Hines' 3-pointer with 4:54 remaining that put the Broncs ahead 49-44. The Cougars cut the deficit to two points on a 3-pointer by Rosenberg with 3:22 left, but Provost answered with a 3-pointer of his own and a free throw by Aaron Urbanus made it 55-49 at the 2:20 mark.

Chicago State managed only a layup by Corey Gray the rest of the way.
