Garrett Jones, who was the Pittsburgh Pirates regular first baseman this past season before being replaced by Justin Morneau, was designated for assignment amid several moves made by the Pirates on Monday.
The Pirates acquired outfielder Jaff Decker and right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas from the San Diego Padres in a trade that sent minor leaguer Alex Dickerson to San Diego.
To clear the two roster spots, Jones and pitcher Kyle McPherson were designated for assignment.
Jones, 32, made $4.5 million this year and hit .233 with 15 homers in 144 games.
Mikolas gave up no hits and no runs in 1 2/3 innings in two appearances for the Padres last season.
Decker hit .286 with 10 homers in 105 games for Triple-A Tucson last season, while Dickerson, 23, hit .288 with 17 homers in 126 games for Double-A Altoona.
