Pine Bluff downs Southern U 55-52, moves into 1st

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) -- Lazabian Jackson had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Arkansas-Pine Bluff pulled into a first-place tie in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a 55-52 victory over Southern University on Saturday night.

Daniel Broughton added 16 points for the Golden Lions (11-13, 10-2 SWAC), who are now tied with Southern (16-8, 10-2) atop the league standings. Tevin Hammond had nine assists and four steals, but also committed seven of Pine Bluff's 22 turnovers.

Derick Beltran scored 18 points and Brandon Moore had 12 for Southern, which shot 31 percent from the field and made only 4 of 17 3-pointers. Pine Bluff, conversely, shot 51 percent, including 7 for 15 on 3-point attempts.

The Jaguars trailed by 10 points in the second half before rallying to tie the game 52-52 on Jameel Grace's two free throws with 1:23 remaining.

Marcel Mosley responded with a go-ahead jumper for the Lions and Hammond hit 1 of 2 free throws to close it out.
