In what some consider a surprise move, the New England Patriots on Wednesday cut third-year cornerback Ras-I Dowling.
Dowling was the first pick in the second round of the 2011 Draft and showed promise, but couldn't stay on the field because of injuries.
Drafted out of Virginia, he earned a starting spot in his rookie year and started the first two games of his career.
He ruptured his patellar tendon and has had trouble staying healthy ever since. He played in only nine games in his first two seasons and twice was placed on injured reserve.
