Dwight Freeney was one of three former Pro Bowl defensive players scheduled to gain an audience with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick on Friday.
Defensive end John Abraham and strong safety Adrian Wilson were also scheduled to be in Foxborough.
All three were released in recent weeks.
New England had one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL for the second straight season in 2012, and must improve its pass rush.
Freeney and Abraham have a combined 229.5 sacks. Abraham is the NFL's active sack leader with 122. He turns 35 in May.
Wilson is a hard-hitting strong safety who essentially served as an extra linebacker with the Arizona Cardinals. He spent his entire 12-year career with the team, but was limited to select defensive personnel packages in 2012.
Freeney played outside linebacker in the 3-4 for the first time last season.
