The Carolina Panthers signed 2013 second-round draft pick Kawann Short on Wednesday, the team announced.
Short, a defensive tackle from Purdue, was the 44th overall pick in the NFL Draft in April. He is the first 2013 pick to sign with the Panthers.
"We are very pleased to have Kawann under contract," Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said. "We felt he was the best pass-rushing defensive tackle in the draft, and we are excited about what he can bring to our defensive front."
Short ranks third in Purdue history in tackles for Loss (49) and sacks (19 1/2) by a defensive tackle. He also excelled on special teams, blocking a school-record eight kicks (six field goal attempts).
As a senior, Short was first-team All-Big Ten and led the Boilermakers with seven sacks and 15 1/2 tackles for loss.
