Padres overpower Cubs

CHICAGO -- The San Diego Padres put on one of their best hitting shows of the season Tuesday night, pounding out 17 hits in a 13-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

"All the way up and down the lineup, everybody got involved," said catcher Nick Hundley, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and three RBIs. "Everybody's driving in runs, and it's contagious."

Yonder Alonso and Carlos Quentin also homered and had three hits apiece as the Padres evened the four-game series with a win in the second game.

The breezy, 80-degree night proved just fine for Padres right-hander Edinson Volquez, who worked 5 2/3 innings. He had just one damaging inning, giving up four runs in the fifth on two-run home runs by Luis Valbuena and Starlin Castro.

Volquez (2-3) allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out three and walking three.

"The first four innings were outstanding," San Diego manager Bud Black said. "His use of the changeup in the strike zone was very effective. I thought the curveball also came into play, and his fastball. ... Overall, I thought Eddie threw the ball fine on a tough night to pitch with the wind blowing out."

San Diego chased Cubs starter Edwin Jackson (0-4) in the fifth with a five-run outburst that resulted in an 8-0 lead. He departed after giving up eight runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

"It was a tough day," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said of Jackson. "Fastball location just wasn't there today. A lot of pitches were middle-middle, and he didn't make a lot of quality pitches when he had to. We've got to keep plugging away with him and get him straightened out."

By the sixth, the Padres had nine runs following Quentin's second home run of the year, a first-pitch solo shot off reliever Kameron Loe.

The Padres opened the scoring in the second when Jedd Gyorko drove home Alonso and Mark Kotsay with a double to right-center.

Quentin delivered a one-out sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Everth Cabrera to make it 3-0.

San Diego sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth.

Cabrera led off with a triple to center and came home on Chase Headley's one-out double to left. Headley scored on Quentin's double down the right field line. Alsono lined his third homer of the season to drive home Quentin. Volquez made it 8-1 with a two-out single to center to score Kotsay.

"It definitely wasn't the best game," said Jackson, whose ERA rose to 6.27. "I think overall it's been a pretty disappointing month from my standpoint from myself, to the team, to the organization and the fans. But it's a test of character. It's one of those times where you can either crumble and fold or you can fight back. And I've never been one to fold."
