Opening 25-year-old baseball cards with Andre Dawson

Fresh off All-Star week in Miami, we’re back with an all-new episode of 25-Year-Old Baseball Cards starring one of the many legends of the game at this year’s MLB Fan Fest — Andre Dawson.

Dawson, a Hall of Famer and one of the most feared sluggers of his era, joined us as we ripped open some 1992 Fleer cards. What was in this week’s wax? Quite a few notable players, starting with Ken Griffey Jr.

The Hawk tells us about his early encounters with a young Griffey, about Jerome Walton’s rookie season in 1992 and the piece of equipment that Lee Smith uses to always steal from him. And when it came time to make a trade, we had yet another Hall of Famer changing hands.

If you’re new to this series, we open baseball cards from 25 years ago with baseball players and famous fans. These cards have been sitting in my garage for years, originally purchased by my grandma when she and I collected cards together. Since they’re not worth anything, we open them up and look for great stories instead.
