The New York Giants began Phase III of their offseason workouts Monday with one notable absence: wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

The Giants are allowed to have offense vs. defense scrimmages for the first time this offseason. In the previous two phases, the team was only able to conduct individual drills or “separate” team drills. Now the Giants are able to run 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills. Live contact is not permitted.

Over the next three weeks, 10 organized team activity (OTA) sessions will take place. Attendance at these sessions is not mandatory although coaches prefer to have the entire team’s participation so they can delve into the offensive and defensive playbooks.

It is unknown why Beckham missed Monday’s session or if he plans to be at future sessions. The next OTA will be held Tuesday. The first session open to media members will be Thursday.

It is also unknown if Beckham was present for the two previous phases of the Giants’ offseason workout program. A source said the Beckham was not a regular participant. He also missed the informal workouts organized by quarterback Eli Manning held at Duke University last month. It was reported Beckham missed the informal workout because he needed to have oral surgery.

The Giants picked up the fifth-year option of Beckham’s rookie contract on April 24. He will make $1.8 million in 2017 with his salary going up to $8.5 million in 2018. Beckham doesn’t have any bonuses in his contract linked to participation in offseason workouts.

General manager Jerry Reese said Beckham needed to “grow up” after he punched a hole in a wall outside the visitor’s locker room at Lambeau Field following the Giants’ Wild Card loss to the Green Bay Packers. Reese was confident Beckham got the message. Co-owner John Mara also went on the record saying that “we are not worried about Odell”.

Beckham vowed to work “harder than I ever have, to be the best I have ever been” after the Giants picked up his fifth-year option.

Beckham is the only known absence at Monday’s OTA. Manning, Sterling Shepard, and Brandon Marshall were in attendance as was cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Cromartie missed the first five weeks of the offseason program.

The Giants’ first mandatory offseason workout is a three-day mini-camp June 13-15.
