The Denver Nuggets waived center Chris Andersen under the amnesty provision, which frees the team from the $9.3 million of his deal in salary cap and luxury tax tabulations.
Andersen, 34, averaged 5.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.44 blocks per game in 32 games with the Nuggets last season.
Andersen returned from a two-year drug suspension and became a fan favorite known as "Birdman."
The Nuggets were reportedly planning to use the savings to sign free agent Anthony Randolph, the 14th overall pick in 2008 who has played for three teams in four seasons.
