NORFOLK, Va. -- The Colonial Athletic Association's best team needed overtime to beat its worst Saturday at Constant Center.
Northeastern's Jonathan Lee scored seven of his 19 points in the extra period, including four free throws in the last nine seconds, as the Huskies spoiled Old Dominion's upset bid for a 79-74 win in the Monarchs' first home game under interim coach Jim Corrigan.
Joel Smith scored a game-high 27 points for Northeastern (16-8, 11-1), while Quincy Ford added 13 and David Walker contributed 11 points. Lee's 3-pointer with 4:13 left in overtime put the Huskies ahead for good at 69-68.
Dimitri Batten came off the bench to score 25 for ODU (3-21, 1-11), which was coming off a 78-66 win at Drexel Thursday night in Corrigan's first game after replacing the fired Blaine Taylor on Tuesday. DeShawn Painter contributed 15 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Nick Wright hit for 10 points.
Painter's layup with two seconds remaining in regulation forced overtime at 66-66. But the Monarchs couldn't overcome 1-of-26 shooting from the 3-point arc and were outscored 25-11 at the foul line.
