Shorthanded North Texas scored with 1.8 seconds left in regulation, then survived a frantic finish to post a 61-59 overtime victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night in a Sun Belt Conference game.
With only eight players available because of injuries, the Eagles (8-12, 3-6) led throughout the overtime period after Roger Franklin's follow of Tony Mitchell's 3-point attempt in the closing seconds of the second half tied the game 53-53.
When North Texas freshman P.J. Hardwick managed to hit only one of two free throws with 21.5 seconds left in the game, however, the host Owls (10-10, 5-4) had one more shot at getting a tie or even a win with a 3-pointer.
But Jackson Trapp missed a jumper, Andre Mattison couldn't get a follow to fall, and time ran out before Greg Gantt could run down the rebound for another attempt.
The Eagles, who jumped out to a 15-3 lead to start the game, got a game-high 22 points from Tony Mitchell, their leading scorer for the season who had gone scoreless two nights earlier in a loss to Florida International.
Gantt led FAU with 22 points but needed 17 attempts for his half-dozen field goals.
