Pendarvis Williams scored six points in the final 71 seconds and Norfolk State won its fifth straight game and preserved its undefeated record in the MEAC with a 73-71 victory on Monday night in Norfolk, Va.
Last season's MEAC tournament champions, the Spartans (11-10, 6-0) got 20 points from Williams, 18 points from Brandon Goode and 17 from Rob Johnson. Norfolk State was outrebounded 43-26 but made up for it with tenacious defense. The Spartans forced 29 turnovers.
Norfolk State had the advantage most of the way, leading by as many as 12 points at 47-35 by the first media timeout of the second half. But Norfolk went cold from the field, missing five of its first 23 shots from the field in the second half. That allowed Morgan State to come back and tie the score on a fallaway 3-pointer from Blake Bozeman with 8:14 left. Then Shaquille Duncan scored to give the Bears a 57-55 lead.
Morgan State's advantage proved to be short lived. Norfolk State responded with a 9-1 run, highlighted by a three-point play from Goode.
Norfolk State was still in front 71-66 with 23 seconds remaining. Morgan got as close as two points, but the Spartans hit enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Anthony Hubbard, a 26-year-old junior-college transfer, had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Morgan State. Justin Black scored 16 points to lead the Bears and DeWayne Jackson added 11.
