PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Norfolk State remained unbeaten in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a 63-58 victory over University of Maryland Eastern Shore, but the winless Hawks gave the Spartans a bit of a scare Saturday at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Junior guard Malcolm Hawkins scored 14 points but made just 3 of 11 field goals for the Spartans (8-10, 3-0), who have won their last two games since losing five in a row from Dec. 11 through Jan. 2.
Hawkins was one of three players who scored in double figures for Norfolk State. Junior guard Pendarvis Williams had 12 points and junior guard Marese Phelps had 10.
Freshman forward Kevin Mays made 10 of 12 field-goal attempts and posted a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds for UMES (0-13, 0-2 MEAC), which lost despite shooting 44.9 percent and holding the Spartans to 33.3 percent.
Sophomore guard Ishaq Pitt added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Hawks, who haven't won since Feb. 25, 2012. Junior center Francis Ezeiru grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for UMES, which outrebounded Norfolk State 42-39.
