What do you get when you mix New York Mets fireballer Noah Syndergaard and Hank Azaria’s new character Jim Brockmire, the namesake of the new IFC series? Comedy, of course.
These two fantastic human beings converged on the Yahoo offices in New York on Tuesday separately, and we wouldn’t be doing our best jobs if we didn’t put them together and ask Brockmire to grill Syndergaard on a variety of topics. That including belt buckles, his Thor nickname and what it’s like to throw 100 mph. Then there was this:
“You were born in Dallas in 1992. That means, Noah Syndergaard, that the Cowboys have sucked your entire life. I have no question. I just wanted to point that out to you.”
It’s a fun interview, particularly once you’re in on the schtick. Azaria’s show “Brockmire” debuts Tuesday night on IFC, it’s about a baseball broadcasting legend who has a meltdown on air then 10 years later attempts to rebuild his career in the minors. He’s a bit off-color, but that’s what makes the show great. Syndergaard, of course, doesn’t need to rebuild anything. His career is going just fine, as one of baseball’s top young pitchers. He joined us on behalf of SportsCrate, a monthly subscription box for baseball fans.
One note, Mets fans: This was a gag. So when you see Brockmire messing with Syndergaard about playing for the Mets, don’t get too mad. Instead, know that Azaria grew up in Queens and is a huge Mets fan.
