Washington Capitals rookie forward Tom Wilson avoided a suspension for his hit on Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Brayden Schenn during Tuesday night's game.
The NHL Department of Player Safety announced its decision on Thursday after a telephone hearing. Schenn was sent flying into the boards on the play and struggled to get up off the ice, but the hit was considered legal.
It was ruled that Schenn made the impact worse when he turned his back while Wilson was on a forecheck, the league explained.
Capitals coach Adam Oates was adamant in defending the 19-year-old Wilson after the game, saying he should not be suspended. Wilson received a charging major and a game misconduct.
Schenn, who left Tuesday's game, was to return to the lineup on Thursday night for a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
