Oct 21 (The Sports Xchange) - Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod was suspended for five games for boarding Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall during Thursday's game, the NHL announced on Monday.

The incident occurred in the first period, and McLeod was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for boarding.

McLeod had one assist in seven games this season, and he had eight goals and four assists in 48 games for Colorado last season.

New York Islanders forward Michael Grabner was suspended for two games by the NHL for an illegal check to the head of Carolina Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe during Saturday's game.

No penalty was called on the play, which occurred in the first period.

The Islanders placed defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky on injured reserve, retroactive to Saturday.

Visnovsky sustained a concussion in Saturday's loss to the Hurricanes.

He has one goal and two assists in eight games.

Defenseman Roman Hamrlik announced his retirement. Hamrlik, the No. 1 pick of the 1992 draft, played 20 seasons and appeared in 1,395 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals and New York Rangers.

The three time All-Star had 638 points on 155 goals and 483 assists. He had three goals and 38 assists in 113 Stanley Cup playoff games.

Hamrlik also won an Olympic gold medal for the Czech national team in 1998.
