Islanders 4, Devils 3

Matt Moulson scored in the sixth round of a shootout to give the New York Islanders a 4-3 road victory over New Jersey.

Michael Grabner scored two goals for the Islanders and added an assist on Frans Nielsen's goal in the third period. Damien Brunner scored twice and Michael Ryder added another for the Devils, who fell to 0-1-1.

Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves for the Islanders, who won a season-opening game for the first time in six years. Martin Brodeur stopped 23 shots for the Devils in his season debut.

Jets 5, Kings 3

Evander Kane scored two goals and the Winnipeg Jets hung on for victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

Kane also chipped in an assist on Devon Setoguchi's third-period goal as the Jets won their home opener to improve to 2-0-0. The Kings fell to 1-1-0.

Flames 4, Blue Jackets 3

Jiri Hudler and Curtis Glencross scored 42 seconds apart late in the third period, and the Calgary Flames beat the Columbus Blue Jackets to earn their first win of the season.

Sean Monahan, part of a youth movement in Calgary, scored the first goal of his NHL career in his second game. T.J. Galiardi also scored.

The Flames, who blew a 4-1 lead and lost 5-4 in overtime on Thursday in Washington, nearly let another slip away, but survived a frantic final few minutes.

Senators 1, Sabres 0

Erik Karlsson ended a scoreless deadlock with 1:35 remaining to lead the Ottawa Senators to a road win over Buffalo.

Karlsson put a one-timer past Sabres goalie Ryan Miller after receiving a pretty pass from Clarke MacArthur.

Karlsson gave Ottawa the victory, but it was the goalies who stole the show. Miller and Craig Anderson put on a goaltending clinic between the pipes, stopping a combined 79 shots before Karlsson found the back of the net.

Red Wings 3, Hurricanes 2

Stephen Weiss scored his first goal as a member of the Red Wings with 1:47 left in overtime as Detroit beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2.

The outcome spoiled the season opener for the Hurricanes, who had newcomers Radek Dvorak and Nathan Gerbe score goals to set the stage for a home win until the waning seconds of regulation.

Henrik Zetterberg forced overtime by scoring with 16.4 seconds left in regulation on a wild scramble in front of the net after the Red Wings pulled goalie Jimmy Howard for an extra skater.

Avalanche 3, Predators 1

Semyon Varlamov had 26 saves in another strong performance and P.A. Parenteau scored twice as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators at home.

Patrick Bordeleau had a goal and rookie Nathan MacKinnon followed his solid NHL debut with another assist for the Avalanche.
