Michael Grabner scored two goals for the Islanders and added an assist on Frans Nielsen's goal in the third period. Damien Brunner scored twice and Michael Ryder added another for the Devils, who fell to 0-1-1. Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves for the Islanders, who won a season-opening game for the first time in six years. Martin Brodeur stopped 23 shots for the Devils in his season debut. - - Jets 5, Kings 3 Evander Kane scored two goals and the Winnipeg Jets hung on for victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Kane also chipped in an assist on Devon Setoguchi's third-period goal as the Jets won their home opener to improve to 2-0-0. Karlsson put a one-timer past Sabres goalie Ryan Miller after receiving a pretty pass from Clarke MacArthur. Karlsson gave Ottawa the victory, but it was the goalies who stole the show. Miller and Craig Anderson put on a goaltending clinic between the pipes, stopping a combined 79 shots before Karlsson found the back of the net. - - Red Wings 3, Hurricanes 2 Stephen Weiss scored his first goal as a member of the Red Wings with 1:47 left in overtime as Detroit beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2. The outcome spoiled the season opener for the Hurricanes, who had newcomers Radek Dvorak and Nathan Gerbe score goals to set the stage for a home win until the waning seconds of regulation. Henrik Zetterberg forced overtime by scoring with 16.4 seconds left in regulation on a wild scramble in front of the net after the Red Wings pulled goalie Jimmy Howard for an extra skater. - - Avalanche 3, Predators 1 Semyon Varlamov had 26 saves in another strong performance and P.A. Parenteau scored twice as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators at home.
