NFP power rankings
Last week we discussed how a win doesn’t necessarily translate to a move north in our power rankings, while a loss won’t always signify a drop. It’s all about the situation. For example, we moved the Miami Dolphins from a power ranking of 82.0 to 81.0 last Tuesday despite the fact that the team had just defeated the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night football, 22-20.
The move was the result of the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin controversy/distraction which, to the surprise of nobody, carried over into Miami’s Monday loss at previously winless Tampa Bay.
The Dolphins dropped again this week, as did the Green Bay Packers. But Green Bay’s plummet has more to do with the loss of Aaron Rodgers than the team’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Without Rodgers, the Packers are a much different football team and, despite a 5-4 record, required a readjustment to their power number to more accurately reflect the state of the roster.
The numbers in brackets indicate each team’s Power Ranking, which is based on a scale of 1-100. These numbers can be used as a baseline to determine the point spread between any two teams on the list. Keep in mind that these numbers do not account for home field advantage, situational analysis (extra rest, back-to-back road games, divisional rivalries, etc), injuries, weather or public perception. They are merely to be used as a baseline for your initial analysis.
