Carolina Panthers safety Colin Jones was fined $21,000 for an illegal blindside block on Chicago Bears long snapper Patrick Mannelly during their Aug. 9 preseason game.
Mannelly, who is out with a rib injury, blamed himself. He said he had no issue with the hit and should have seen Jones coming.
"It was poor field awareness on my part," Mannelly told the Chicago Sun-Times.
The NFL has been making a point of protecting players running down the field while covering kicks.

---The Green Bay Packers released quarterback Graham Harrell, which likely means Vince Young will back up Aaron Rodgers, ESPN reported Saturday.
Young led an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Amosa in the third quarter of Friday's 17-10 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Young completed 6 of 7 passes for 41 yards and had a 130.7 passer rating. He also rushed the ball three times for 39 yards, including a 21-yarder.
Harrell was 6-for-13 passing for 49 yards. He served as Rodgers' backup last season after spending two years on the practice squad.

---Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen said he is reassessing the team's quarterback situation after Friday night's 34-26 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears.
Matt Flynn was expected to start the season opener, but struggled Friday. He threw two interceptions after six pass attempts and was replaced by Terrelle Pryor in the second quarter.
Pryor marched the offense down the field before settling for a field goal late in the half. In the third quarter, he ran and threw for touchdowns. Pryor completed seven of nine passes for 93 yards and rushed for 37 yards.

---The Carolina Panthers cut 12 players Saturday, including injured offensive tackle Bruce Campbell, wide receiver Kealoha Pilares and fullback Michael Zordich.
Pilares sustained a knee injury during Thursday's 34-27 preseason win over the Baltimore Ravens. Campbell (shoulder) and Zordich (knee) were injured earlier during training camp. Campbell was listed as the backup left tackle but rotator cuff surgery is expected to prevent him from playing this year. Pilares was iffy to make the roster even if he were healthy.
Carolina also waived quarterback Colby Cameron, punter Jordan Gay, cornerback Nick Hixson, kicker Morgan Lineberry, wide receiver Dale Moss, defensive end Louis Nzegwu, linebacker Ryan Rau, safety Ricardo Silva and guard Justin Wells.
