Need some bags? Call Maybin (maybe)

“Here for a good time, not for a long time.” It’s one of the taglines from Richard Linklater’s 2016 film, Everybody Wants Some.

And maybe it applies to Cameron Maybin, as well.

Maybin had a little fantasy juice before the 2018 season, projected as a regular in the Miami lineup. Cheap speed and all that. But Maybin stumbled out of April with a .619 OPS and soon was out of a regular gig. Everyone cut bait on the Marlin.

Maybin returned to the radar in July, taking over in center field when Lewis Brinson (hip) hit the DL. Maybin was really cooking in the week before the All-Star break, on an 8-for-21 bender, one homer, and a whopping nine walks. It slashes out to .381/.567/.524.

Okay, it’s a tiny sample and no one is that good; no eureka moment there. And some of those walks were born out of a low batting slot in an NL lineup. But what really caught my eye is the five bases Maybin stole over his last seven games. We’ve seen him go on these types of running binges before, and Miami is one of those teams that has a laissez faire approach on the bases. Perhaps Maybin can be a nifty short-term add for fantasy teams that can make a quick leap in the SB column.

Brinson remains out indefinitely, so Maybin’s short-term playing time should be safe. I’ve added Maybin in a few deeper leagues where I could use the steals. It’s with the ultimate short leash, but if Maybin’s on base, I expect him to be running. He’s free to grab in 98 percent of Yahoo leagues.
