The Washington Nationals acquired outfielder David DeJesus from the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later, reported Monday.
To make room on the roster, the Nationals released outfielder Roger Bernadina, who hit just .178 in 85 games this season.
The left-handed-hitting DeJesus, 33, is hitting .250 with six homers in 84 games this season.
Washington is 9 1/2 games out of a playoff spot, so this does not seem like a move for this season.
DeJesus' contract has a $6.5 million team option or a $1.5 million buyout for next year.
