ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) -- Matt Smith and Darryl Marshall combined for 41 points to help Mississippi Valley State defeat Prairie View A&M 73-64 Saturday in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
Smith was 8 of 10 from the field for 21 points and pulled down eight boards. Marshall made all five shot attempts, including three 3-pointers, en route to 20 points, grabbed four boards, and dished out five assists for MVSU (2-14, 2-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak.
MVSU led 17-8 after Marshall hit a 3-pointer but Prairie View (7-12, 2-4) cut the deficit to 24-22 with 6:20 left in the opening half. However, Johnson answered with a trey and the Delta Devils outscored the Panthers 11-4 the rest of the way to take a 35-26 lead into the break.
Jourdan Demuynck had 16 for Prairie View, which closed the gap to one point three times in the second half but could not retake the lead.
