Jose Mourinho insists the reasoning behind his decision not to buy a striker in the January transfer window will be revealed come the summer.
With Fernando Torres nursing a knee injury Mourinho had been expected to bolster his forward ranks this month with Samuel Eto’o, a recent hat trick against Manchester United aside, struggling for form and Demba Ba reduced to the role of bit-part player.
Chelsea has long admirered Monaco forward Radamel Falcao, who had been close to agreeing a deal to move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, and has also been linked with Diego Costa, the man who has taken up the goalscoring baton from the Colombian at Atletico Madrid.
"Many people don't understand why we don't do [business] but, in the summer, you will understand," said Mourinho, when asked why he hadn’t invested in a striker this month. "No [deals lined up for a striker], but we know what we want."
The Blues boss also admitted new signings Nemanja Matic, Mohamed Salah and Kurt Zouma are part of a long-term plan for the club, and he won't be rushing for a new front man.
"We don't want emergency plans, it's not our profile now," he added. "The players we're signing now are the right ones for our future: Matic, Salah, Zouma, a young kid for the future.
"We won't sign a striker now as an emergency plan to score half a dozen goals to give us half a dozen extra points, whatever that would mean for us.
"Our objective is to finish in a Champions League spot. That's the competitive objective, because the greater objective is the improvement of the team and preparing the team for the future."
Chelsea travels to Premier League leader Manchester City on Monday and will move level on points with Manuel Pellegrini's side with a win.
City is unbeaten in its last 20 games in all competitions, but Mourinho insists Chelsea will not change its approach to the game.
"The reality is they [City] have had many crucial decisions in their favor," he added. "They were lucky against Liverpool, against Newcastle and against Tottenham. But I repeat this is just pure coincidence.
"We are not going to change our philosophy. We are going in a certain direction, and just because we are playing a certain opponent doesn't mean we are going to change that. We are going to try to win."
