SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Devon Moore made his only carry count as his second-effort on a 1-yard touchdown run lifted Western Illinois to a 38-35 win over Missouri State with less than a minute left to play on Saturday.
Moore, a 227-pound senior, capped an 11-play final drive with the winner when he took the handoff and hit the pile head-on, driving until he broke the plane, giving the Leathernecks (5-1, 2-1) a 38-35 lead with 43 seconds to go. Western Illinois sealed the win when Xavier Rowe intercepted Brodie Lambert with 26 seconds remaining in the game.
Lambert completed 24 of 43 passes for 290 yards and fired five touchdowns, including three straight in the fourth quarter as Missouri State (3-3, 1-2) surged ahead 35-31 with 4:22 remaining. Lambert was picked off three times.
