LHP Aaron Laffey, RHP Joel Carreno and RHP Drew Hutchison are possibilities to start on April 21, the next time a fifth starter will be needed in the rotation because of off days in the schedule last Thursday and on Monday.
"I don't have an exact number (of candidates), but you've seen them all in spring training," manager John Farrell said. "The guys who started opening day or first or second game (in the minors), kind of fall in line, just counting out five days from the minor-league opening day." Carreno started for the Blue Jays in Cleveland on April 8. He was returned to Class AAA Las Vegas, where he won on April 13 as he allowed one hit, two walks and no runs while striking out eight in a five-inning start.
