RHP Chad Gaudin got the victory Sunday after pitching the final three innings, allowing two hits, two walks and striking out one. But Gaudin also was forced to bat in the 10th inning with two on and the game tied. He bounced out, making him 1-for-34 in his career.
Bench players Donnie Murphy, Austin Kearns and Brett Hayes were available to pinch hit, but interim manager Joey Cora could not remove Gaugin, Miami's long reliever. Edward Mujica, Steve Cishek and Randy Choate all had pitched three straight days, and closer Heath Bell threw 46 pitches in the previous two games. "It was gut wrenching," Cora said. "He was the last man standing. If we were losing, then we'd take a chance. It was tied and we just didn't have anybody else available to pitch."
