Preseason All-America center Mitch McGary will miss the University of Michigan's season opener on Friday due to a sore back.
Coach John Beilein confirmed Thursday that the 6-foot-10 sophomore would miss the seventh-ranked Wolverines' home game against the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
"He's improving every day, making great improvements in everything he can do," Beilein said on WTKA-AM radio.
Last season, McGary helped guide the Wolverines to the national championship game, which they lost to Louisville. In the NCAA Tournament, he averaged 14.3 points and 10.8 rebounds, a big improvement over his overall averages of 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds.
